Your LDR can work if you and your partner are willing to put in the work. Plenty of people make it through but long distance isn't for everyone.
Long distance relationships can work, let’s first put that out there to ease your mind. However, they are difficult and involve a lot of trust and communication. Without it, your long distance relationship will likely fail. Even if you and your partner decide that you don’t want to be monogamous in your LDR, you'll still need honesty and communication to make it work.
Do long distance relationships last?
LDRs last as long as you and your partner want them to. If you are both willing to put in the extra work they require, it can last a long time. However, the sooner you move closer to each other, the better because you also want to make sure your relationship is compatible with your every day life.
There are many reasons why LDRs don't last including the obvious, distance. Sometimes, it’s the wrong time and hard to keep up with someone that is far away from you. This doesn’t mean you wouldn’t work if you lived closer and doesn’t mean that you’re not great partners, it just means that long distance may not be for you or you need to be with someone that you can see often.
What is the success rate of long distance relationships?
Generally speaking, the success rate of long distance relationships doesn't really matter or impact your relationship. But, if you are looking for a number, a study by KIIROO, an interactive sex toy company, surveyed 1,000 Americans and found that 58% were successful. To us, the percentage is pretty encouraging because LDRs are tough so, maybe your long-distance relationship will make it afterall.
KIIROO also found that if you make it to 8 months in the relationship, things get a lot easier. And the biggest hurdle for a relationship is the 4-month mark, when the beginning relationship lust wears off and the distance starts to become a burden.
Are long distance relationships worth it?
Long distance relationships are worth it, it just depends on whether you and your partner are good for each other. And, again, communication! If you put in the work, it can work but there will be tough times. So, if you go into the relationship knowing that and being open-minded, it is likely to work. But also knowing when to to let go of a long distance relationship is important too.
Why do long distance relationships fail?
There are many reasons why long distance relationships fail, including:
Wanting to be with someone that you can see more frequently: Not being able to see your significant other every day, week, month or even year can be really tough. You and your significant other will likely miss out on day-to-day activities and maybe miss some important events in each others' lives.
Lack of physical intimacy
Trust issues
Financial strain because of travel
Unrealistic expectations for in-person meetings
How to make your LDR work
As we have stated many times in this article, trust and communication are the most important components to a long distance relationship, assuming the love and romance is already there. Still, you don't want to excessively communicate with your partner but checking in every day and making time to FaceTime, call, and visit each other is important.
